"The Duke of Cornwall's Community Safety Award Scheme is coming to Essex"
The Essex Resilience Forum (ERF) is proud to support the Duke of Cornwall Community Safety Award, a national scheme designed to help young people aged 5–18 build essential skills in emergency preparedness and community resilience.
The Duke of Cornwall Award is a fantastic opportunity to develop skills, build confidence, and demonstrate your contribution to resilience and community preparedness across Essex. Any young person can complete the award; you can do it as part of a community group, school or in a family group with the support of an adult to act as your Leader.
The award is free and open to groups such as schools, youth groups and community groups, families and individuals across Essex. It is a fantastic opportunity to undertake guided tasks to build awareness and skills to become more resilient to emergencies that might affect your community. Once you have completed your worksheet, you can download your certificate and order a badge to celebrate your success!
Each stage introduces practical activities focused on keeping safe at home, understanding local risks, and supporting community preparedness. On completion, young people can demonstrate how they might assist during a local incident, including checking on vulnerable residents and sharing safety information skills that align strongly with Essex’s whole community approach to resilience.
How do we get started? - Follow the 5 steps below and we'll take you through the whole process.
Step 1:
Choose your award
Decide which award you would like to complete based on the age of the child; you have 3 to choose from.
- Home Award – Ages 5-10
- Neighbourhood Award – Ages 10-14
- Community Award – Ages 14-18

Neighbourhood Award (10–14 years)

- Explore local hazards and different types of emergencies.
- Understand simple steps to reduce risks and stay safe.
- Learn what to do if an emergency happens.
- Create a home emergency plan and prepare a grab bag.
- Identify safe places and ways to support your community.
Community Award (14–18 years)

- Identify risks and hazards that could affect your community
- Understand how emergencies can impact people, places and services.
- Learn practical ways to build personal and community resilience.
- Explore how communities can prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.
- Share your learning with your family and community group to help build stronger and more resilience communities
Step 2:
Download the award resources
Ask your Leader to download the resources for the award you have chosen, you will find the links below. For each award there are two documents:
- Leader’s Pack – Guidance and instructions for completing the award.
- Worksheet – For you to complete, to record your activities and learning.

Step 3:
Complete the Activities
Your Leader will guide you through the activities using the guidance provided in the Leader’s Pack and you will complete all relevant sections within the worksheet.
Ensure you:
- Follow the guidance provided by your Leader, working with your Group or Family to undertake the activities described.
- Complete all required sections of the worksheet.
- Add photos of activities and any pictures you have created, or copies of presentations that evidence your work.
- Keep a record of your progress.
- Gather together evidence to show how you have met the requirements of the award.
Step 4:
Submit Your Evidence
Once you have completed all activities:
- Ensure your worksheet is complete
- Collate your evidence into one submission
- Provide it to your Leader.
Step 5:
Receive Your Award
After your submission has been reviewed by your Leader and they have assessed that you have met the requirements of the award, you will be eligible for:
- The Duke of Cornwall Award Certificate
- The Duke of Cornwall Award badge
Your Leader will be able to download you a copy of the Award Certificate recognising your fantastic achievement and purchase you the Duke of Cornwall Award Badge.
